Shaila Ramachandran, who is 12 years old, is a 6th grade student at Stoller Middle School in Beaverton, OR. She has been learning Bharatanatyam since the age of 4 at the Anjali School of Dance and has over 20 performances to her credit. Shaila has also given a 1 hour solo performance in India accompanied by some of the most notable musicians in the field. Besides being a talented dancer, she also learns carnatic vocal music from Archana Ranjan. She enjoys reading, swimming, basketball and working on art projects. Her aspiration to be a veterinarian was born out of her love for animals. Shaila’s parents, Anita & Mahendra Ramachandran, have instilled in her strong values of dedication, hard work and a desire for excellence.
The 2 hour solo dance recital included eight elaborately choreographed items which feature intricate footwork and graceful movements set to melodious and rhythmic Indian classical music. Shaila will be accompanied by a live orchestra of accomplished artists: Anita Menon (cymbals), Archana Ranjan (vocal), Mini Jairaj (vocal), Subrahmanyam Sudhakar (percussion), Shailaja Prasannan (veena - Indian stringed instrument), Anand Rangarajan (violin) and Tejasvi Chakravarthy (flute).
