School of Dance

The Anjali School of Dance was founded in 1996 to provide training in the ancient Indian art form of Bharatanatyam to students in the greater Portland area. There are over fifty students currently at the studio in Hillsboro. Students are directed through the rigorous process of learning the basic steps and gestures to choreographing major pieces. They also receive instruction in the various elements of stage performance and production. Students have presented over 800 performances at various community events. There is ongoing enrollment at all levels.

Choreography
Advanced students are offered the opportunity to learn choreography starting with simple dances and leading up to complex items.
Private lessons
The intense one on one classes focus on total perfection and involve a high level of commitment.
Make-up and costume design
Interested students are taught the art of applying make up for Bharatanatyam as well as designing costumes for performances.
Pre-Bharatanatyam
Besides being a creative movement class, students enact myths and legends from around the world using hand gestures used in Bharatanatyam.
Beginner Bharatanatyam
Students are taught the elementary techniques of both aspects of the art form (nritta and nritya).
Lighting design
Students who are interested lighting design have opportunities to learn and to put their skills to use at various school performances.
Dance Company
Is offered to students who have completed their solo dance graduation performance (arangetram).
Sound Design
Students who are interested sound design have opportunities to learn and to put their skills to use at various school performances.
Intermediate Bharatanatyam
With each passing year students are introduced to intermediate Bharatanatyam technique building on the solid foundations.
Beginner Items
Students are taught dances where steps are sewn together in various combinations of beats and rhythms.
Advanced Items
After several years of training, students are ready to learn complex dances involving fast rhythmic footwork as well as intense face expressions.
Lobby Decoration
Students learn how to design and decorate a thematic lobby based on the preformance.
